Summer is a State of Mind

by Louis Savalli on February 1, 2011

Summer is a state of mind. The freedom we all remember having as kids, the go-anywhere do-anything wherever the day takes us kind of freedom. It’s one of the reasons a lot of us love the Spring and Summer; because we closely associate it with freedom, love and adventure.

Summer is a state of mind. It doesn’t exist somewhere in the past or in your memory. Those feelings of freedom and fun exist right now, within you. We all keep in our minds that one summer, or that one girl, or that one vacation that we’ll always remember because of how we felt. The kind that comes back to us in dreams again and again and again.

Those feelings are ours – they’re ours to enjoy whenever we choose. The purpose of fleeting experiences like the ones I’ve described are to teach us what is possible – to open us to other kinds of feelings we didn’t know before. So of course that one summer you fell in love with that one person and it was magical but it didn’t last. It wasn’t supposed to last and wouldn’t have worked if you tried. The point was for you to learn something; to experience something – to learn what it was possible to feel like.

And then – to learn how to access that feeling at your own choosing. This is why I say you can go home again. You can be free again, you can fall in love again, you can relax again. All of this never left you; we’ve just forgotten.

Here’s to remembering…
